What to Expect From a Vasectomy

Your vasectomy journey will usually begin with an appointment with your doctor. Depending on the clinic, you may schedule an appointment with our doctor before the actual date of the procedure. This is to allow you ample time to prepare for your vasectomy appointment.

If you are wondering what the process is like, then read below to find out more.

Initial Appointment with the Vasectomy Doctor

You will start by booking an appointment to see a doctor – usually a board-certified urologist. Unlike most procedures, you don’t have to go to a big hospital for this kind of procedure. Rather, you can meet one of our vasectomy doctors in our private clinic in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

During the appointment, you will discuss your needs for the procedure. Your doctor will then let you know if you are the right candidate, and bring to your attention any concerns that might arise in your case.

If all is good, and you agree to all the terms, you will get a booking for the procedure. Before the actual date of the procedure, however, you will be advised on the kind of preparations you should make.

Preparing for a Vasectomy

Just like any other procedure, there are certain things that you should and shouldn’t do before visiting the vasectomy clinic for your procedure. Here are some factors to keep in mind when preparing for a vasectomy:

One week before the procedure

Avoid Aspirin and Aspirin-like products one week before the procedure. This is because Aspirin is a blood thinner and it may increase the risk of bleeding complications during and after no-scalpel vasectomy.

During the consultation with your vasectomy doctor, they will generally ask you to stop taking medications that may hamper the proper clotting of blood for about a week prior to undergoing the procedure.

Aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen belong to this category.

2 – 3 days before the procedure

Shave pubic hair

About three days before the procedure, you will be required to shave or clip your pubic hair.

It is not necessary that you get rid of all the pubic hair, but doctors will generally ask you to shave most of the hair on the underside of your penis as well as all the hair present in the front of your scrotum.

This is to ensure that the surgical area is clean and easily accessible to the doctor.

Take pre-op medicine

This is only for those who may experience mild anxiety before the procedure. Your doctor may prescribe you anti-anxiety medication that you can take a day or two before the procedure to help you calm down and get more composed for the procedure.

On the day of the surgery

Start the day with a shower

On the day of the vasectomy, ensure to shower properly, washing your genital area with plenty of soap and water. This will help reduce the risk of infection during the procedure. Ideally, you should shower right before you travel to the vasectomy clinic.

Put on comfortable clothing

During a vasectomy, you don’t have to get completely undressed. You do, however, need to be in very comfortable clothing.

It is highly recommended that you wear close-fitting underwear that will offer adequate support for the scrotum after the procedure. This will help to reduce the chances of swelling while at the same time improving comfort.

Eat lightly

During a vasectomy, we use local anesthesia and not general anesthesia. As such, there is no need for a fast before the procedure.

On the other hand, having heavy food sitting in your stomach during the procedure may also be problematic.

As such, you should eat lightly before the procedure so that you don’t walk in on a completely empty stomach.
Arrange for someone to drive you back home
Just as a precaution, have someone drive you to and from the clinic after the procedure.
